Note from Wifey – I also picked up the Shelter box for my husband (no longer available), and the Detailed box. I know he loved the Shelter box and the fancy umbrella. Zero word on Detailed. I think he was either pissed about it or tucked it away because the snow hadn’t melted in Vermont. Probably both. Some guys are really into detailing their cars – he isn’t one of them. At all. I didn’t do an April Birchbox Man review, or a May one. The February Birchbox Man came with a cryptic note listing cat behaviors (I think).  I have no idea why, because the box contains several very nice products completely unrelated to cats.   It was apparently an epic printing/proofing error.

Power Stays

würkin stiffs Power Stays ($20)  Very cool.  I have never seen these before:  metal collar stays secured with very powerful magnets.  I assumed they would be flimsy and the magnets would fall of in my shirt, but I was very surprised at how sturdy they are. The stays are letter-opener thick, and the magnets are strong enough that they thwarted several attempts to photograph them unattached to the stays.

Pomade & Cologne

Baxter of California Hard Cream Pomade ($3) a hard cream, but extremely silky.  Unlike a putty or clay, it feels like spongy butter and quickly becomes tacky when worked into hair.

English Laundry Signature ($1.50)  their “Signature” fragrance combines bergamot, vetiver, and sandalwood.  I really like this fragrance (perhaps because my everyday cologne is vetiver-based and I am crazy about earl grey); it actually reminds me of fresh laundry.  It’s very fresh and warm, and the bergamot adds a citrus brightness without smelling like Pledge.  I’ve enjoyed each of the English Laundry fragrances I’ve sampled, but this may be my favorite.

Ayres & Face Wash

Gentleman’s Brand Co. Foaming Face Wash ($3.85)  made of mainly organic plant extracts, this Aussie offering has no harsh chemicals.  It is witch hazel-based, but the various plant extracts give it a vaguely twizzlerish secondary aroma.

AYRES Bar Soap ($1.57)  Shea butter based, this Patagonian product is very lightly scented with jasmine and rosemary.  Appears to be dye-free and has a pleasant waxiness instead of the typical greasiness you’d expect from a shea bar.

My February Birchbox Man was right around $30 – perhaps one of the lowest value boxes I’ve received. Nevertheless I’m very pleased with the collar stays and will use everything else. I renewed my subscription just the other week. An annual subscription is $195 – which means you get 2 free boxes, plus you get points for purchasing the subscription and for reviewing the items in it – almost $80 in points back. I think it’s a good deal.

FACA Italian Wool Tie ($50) Textured ties are trending, and the FACA Italian wool tie is  a great starter piece.  The palate goes well with a classic charcoal or grey suit and also presents a nice contrast when paired with a richly colored shirt.  Very versatile and durable.

Richer Poorer Veteran Socks

Richer Poorer Veteran Socks ($12) Richer Poorer’s “Veteran” socks were the nicest surprise of all.  They bring some fun to any outfit, whether formal or casual.  What surprised me was the fit — most men’s socks are sized so big that the heel portion ends up close to my calf (I like to yank my socks all the way up).  these were sized appropriately, and the heel fell in just the right spot even when cranked up.

The total value for January’s Ashton Kutcher Fancy Box is $102. One of my goals for the year is to start wearing the fun socks I receive in boxes more frequently. I thought this was a great way to start.

December 2013 Five Four Club

This month I received two items – a cardigan and a pair of sweatpants – and I was very pleased with both. There may have been socks included with other members’ packages, as a stocking stuffer, but they were not in my package. December’s Five Four Club included items that were comfortable, casual, and stylish and great for the winter cold.

Five Four Cato Cardigan ($98) This cardigan is a great royal blue and I’ve worn it each day since opening my package. It’s pretty sophisticated for a cardigan and keeps me warm. I like that you can pop the collar for a neckwarmer.

Five Four Club Sweatpants

Five Four Larch Sweatpants ($60) These pants are fitted and feature zipper leg openings and zipper pockets. I didn’t think I would be crazy about the zipper pockets but they keep stuff from falling out when you lounge. They are comfortable but not a baggy mess like most sweatpants. The insides are terry so they should hold up well.

My Five Four Club package had a total value of almost $165, and cost just $60. And I didn’t have to do anything. I was very happy with December and am looking forward to my January package.
