Note from Wifey – I also picked up the Shelter box for my husband (no longer available), and the Detailed box. I know he loved the Shelter box and the fancy umbrella. Zero word on Detailed. I think he was either pissed about it or tucked it away because the snow hadn’t melted in Vermont. Probably both. Some guys are really into detailing their cars – he isn’t one of them. At all. But I have heard really awesome things about that box and the high quality of the paste wax.  Neither of us have a clue why the booklet for this box was so ugly. Speaking of the shop – I totally busted out the Mr. Kensington’s tonight because we ran out of Heinz. Our refined children approved.

Bespoke Post Review: Carry Box

IMG_0140

The Bespoke Post Carry Box contains some fun summer accessories.  The Line of Trade slim wallet and Malibu Keyrings carabiner are a fun way to tote your essentials.  The JLK Sails bracelet and Carolina Manufacturing bandana will add some flair to any summer outfit.  Thrown in for good measure are classic Choward’s mints.

Another note from wife – I guarantee you that my husband’s use of flair is in the Office Space sense. He doesn’t wear bracelets. However, he’s a fan of any super slimline wallet, so I still got him this box. I expect that the kids will have a new bandana to play with as long as my husband doesn’t find a Rick Springfield revival to wear it to. And I don’t joke – the other summer in Vermont there was totally a concert.

I didn’t do an April Birchbox Man review, or a May one. However, my wife got her own box for May (??) and you can view her May Birchbox Man review here. The highlights of my April and May boxes were the lifestyle items. My April box included a $50 pair of headphones and the May Birchbox Man included a great storage pouch from Roosevelt Supply. I have other pieces from that brand and they are all extremely sturdy.

June 2014 Birchbox Man: Away We Go

IMG_0146

June’s Birchbox Man focused on saying yes to travel adventure.
IMG_0142

Included this month are Tommy John loafer liners to protect your feet and keep them dry and comfortable.  The Laundress Wash & Stain bar lets you keep your clothes spotless on the go, and Toweldry styling clay creates the sharp hair to match.IMG_0145

My Birchbox Man also included brightly scented Mt. Sapola lemongrass lotion and Tahitian Waters cologne from English Laundry, my favorite purveyor of colognes and eau de toilette, a Birchbox discovery for me.

The two-pack of Ultimate Liner socks are valued at $16.50. My wife says both Birchboxes are a good deal, but that the men’s box is best because of the monthly accessory or clothing item.

March 2014 Birchbox Man: Gentleman’s Code

IMG_0115   IMG_0118 Luster Premium White: this fast-acting whitener brightens from first use. Luster offers a complete whitener suite, but this is an easy entree to whitening. Has a fresh, minty flavor similar to Pepsident.

CLEAN eau de toilette: their Shower Fresh scent lets you smell freshly-lathered even when you are due for a wash. Smells like soap. IMG_0120 Drinkwel: these capsules are specifically-designed to help your body process alcohol and let you wake up with minimal malaise. IMG_0116 MeUndies: this classic tee is soft and simple. The slim fit flatters without being fussy.

The value of the MeUndies shirt is $25, well over the cost of the box. A yearly Birchbox Man subscription is $195, which makes it $16.25 per month. You get Birchbox points for reviewing the items in the box, which you can use on full-size products at the store.

Birchbox Man Review – February 2014

The February Birchbox Man came with a cryptic note listing cat behaviors (I think).  I have no idea why, because the box contains several very nice products completely unrelated to cats.   It was apparently an epic printing/proofing error.

February 2014 Birchbox Man: Gentleman’s Code

Back of Info Card

Back of Info Card

Fortunately the back of the card was not laced with bizarre cat behaviors.

Power Stays

Power Stays

würkin stiffs Power Stays ($20)  Very cool.  I have never seen these before:  metal collar stays secured with very powerful magnets.  I assumed they would be flimsy and the magnets would fall of in my shirt, but I was very surprised at how sturdy they are. The stays are letter-opener thick, and the magnets are strong enough that they thwarted several attempts to photograph them unattached to the stays.

Pomade & Cologne

Pomade & Cologne

Baxter of California Hard Cream Pomade ($3) a hard cream, but extremely silky.  Unlike a putty or clay, it feels like spongy butter and quickly becomes tacky when worked into hair.

English Laundry Signature ($1.50)  their “Signature” fragrance combines bergamot, vetiver, and sandalwood.  I really like this fragrance (perhaps because my everyday cologne is vetiver-based and I am crazy about earl grey); it actually reminds me of fresh laundry.  It’s very fresh and warm, and the bergamot adds a citrus brightness without smelling like Pledge.  I’ve enjoyed each of the English Laundry fragrances I’ve sampled, but this may be my favorite.

Ayres & Face Wash

Ayres & Face Wash

Gentleman’s Brand Co. Foaming Face Wash ($3.85)  made of mainly organic plant extracts, this Aussie offering has no harsh chemicals.  It is witch hazel-based, but the various plant extracts give it a vaguely twizzlerish secondary aroma.

AYRES Bar Soap ($1.57)  Shea butter based, this Patagonian product is very lightly scented with jasmine and rosemary.  Appears to be dye-free and has a pleasant waxiness instead of the typical greasiness you’d expect from a shea bar.

My February Birchbox Man was right around $30 – perhaps one of the lowest value boxes I’ve received. Nevertheless I’m very pleased with the collar stays and will use everything else. I renewed my subscription just the other week. An annual subscription is $195 – which means you get 2 free boxes, plus you get points for purchasing the subscription and for reviewing the items in it – almost $80 in points back. I think it’s a good deal.

Root Bizzle Tie Subscription Review

Root Bizzle sent me this tie for my review.

Root Bizzle sends you a new tie every month to keep your collection from getting stale.  There’s nothing worse then the ole tie rut, where you grab the same one of your four ties every time you need to throw one on.   No one likes to shop for ties or put faith in the obligatory Father’s Day offering.  Choose to receive selections from business, skinny or whimsical collections and never worry about ties again. Root Bizzle offers three styles, two lengths, and they are all 100% silk.

Root Bizzle Tie

Root Bizzle Tie

I thought this was a great unique look. The colors were coordinated, it had an interesting but understated pattern, and I will probably wear this one once per week (I wear ties frequently). It was well-constructed and the silk was heavy weight. You can sign up for your first month of Root Bizzle with coupon Grabatologist to get half off your first month.
The Subscription: Root Bizzle
The Description: Build your own stylish, 100% silk tie collection. Receive a handpicked tie monthly from the style of your choice: Skinny, Whimsical, or Business. You’ll select the length, too. Ties are designed in Italy and are either woven or digitally printed.
The Price: $25 per month.

Phone Case of the Month Review

Posted by Thomas on January 26, 2014

This is really my wife’s subscription but she let me have a few cases (she just switched the type of phone on her profile). Phone Case of the Month is a monthly mobile phone case subscription available for iPhone and Samsung Galaxy.

I’ve never been one for phone cases, but I was sure glad she had sent me some cases when my phone fell onto the concrete floor.  The cases are designed for fashion, but it did provide enough protection that my screen didn’t crack.  The cover broke, but no matter, a new one just showed up!   This month was a cool California design for the winter-weary; they even threw in some bonus “flair”!  You can download matching wallpaper through your subscription portal. Of course it comes with the microfiber pouch, and as I am obsessed with glasses cleaning cloths, I appreciated the little bag very much.

The Subscription: Phone Case of the Month
The Description: A limited edition phone case every month for only $10. Only 200 printed and all designs are exclusive to this subscription. Each package includes a one of a kind phone case.  Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4 in addition to iPhone cases including 5c.
The Price: $10 per month
The Coupon: Get your first box for just $5 – a $5 savings! No code necessary.

January Ashton Kutcher Fancy Box Review

January 2014 Ashton Kutcher Fancy Box

January 2014 Ashton Kutcher Fancy Box

It’s nice to have Ashton Kutcher on retainer as your personal stylist.  The latest installment in the Ashton Kutcher Fancy Box (which isn’t always, and in fact rarely is clothing) offers some fun and relaxed updates to your office wardrobe. Last month my wife bought me the December Ashton Kutcher Fancy Box for Christmas. That was an awesome box and it was the Fancy.com Black Friday special instead of the actual box – which was a single watch. I preferred the box I received. There were only 3 items in this month’s Fancy Box because two of them were high-value.

The Subscription: Ashton Kutcher A+ Fancy Box
The Description: Get A+ swag, gear, and goods every month curated by Ashton Kutcher.
The Price: $39.95 plus $7.95 shipping per month.
The Coupon: Save 10% on Ashton’s A+ Fancy Box. Use code FOLLOWUP10.

FACA Bullet Cufflinks

FACA Bullet Cufflinks

FACA Bullet Cufflinks ($40)  FACA cuff links are also featured in this box.  Mine were brass and silver bullets.  They are sure to draw some attention… from colleagues and the TSA alike.

FACA Italian Wool Tie

FACA Italian Wool Tie

FACA Italian Wool Tie ($50) Textured ties are trending, and the FACA Italian wool tie is  a great starter piece.  The palate goes well with a classic charcoal or grey suit and also presents a nice contrast when paired with a richly colored shirt.  Very versatile and durable.

Richer Poorer Veteran Socks

Richer Poorer Veteran Socks

Richer Poorer Veteran Socks ($12) Richer Poorer’s “Veteran” socks were the nicest surprise of all.  They bring some fun to any outfit, whether formal or casual.  What surprised me was the fit — most men’s socks are sized so big that the heel portion ends up close to my calf (I like to yank my socks all the way up).  these were sized appropriately, and the heel fell in just the right spot even when cranked up.

Great Fit

Great Fit

The total value for January’s Ashton Kutcher Fancy Box is $102. One of my goals for the year is to start wearing the fun socks I receive in boxes more frequently. I thought this was a great way to start.

December Five Four Club Review

My Five Four Club subscription for December featured a sweet cardigan and Eric Decker as Five Four’s newest ambassador.

Five Four Clothing - Eric Decker

Five Four Clothing – Eric Decker

Five Four clothing will now only be available to club members. My wife & I found that interesting, as there’s a store in our mall (in the DC area) that is filled with Five Four clothing.

December 2013 Five Four Club

This month I received two items – a cardigan and a pair of sweatpants – and I was very pleased with both. There may have been socks included with other members’ packages, as a stocking stuffer, but they were not in my package. December’s Five Four Club included items that were comfortable, casual, and stylish and great for the winter cold.

Five Four Club Cardigan

Five Four Club Cardigan

Five Four Cato Cardigan ($98) This cardigan is a great royal blue and I’ve worn it each day since opening my package. It’s pretty sophisticated for a cardigan and keeps me warm. I like that you can pop the collar for a neckwarmer.

Five Four Club Sweatpants

Five Four Club Sweatpants

Five Four Larch Sweatpants ($60) These pants are fitted and feature zipper leg openings and zipper pockets. I didn’t think I would be crazy about the zipper pockets but they keep stuff from falling out when you lounge. They are comfortable but not a baggy mess like most sweatpants. The insides are terry so they should hold up well.

My Five Four Club package had a total value of almost $165, and cost just $60. And I didn’t have to do anything. I was very happy with December and am looking forward to my January package.
