January 2014 Birchbox Man Review

Looking for January 2015? Go here. No, I have no idea why Google is sending you here.

January’s Birchbox Man is about getting lean & mean – or about making promises to do so. I have similarly promised myself to try out P90X. Birchbox Man would instead like us to make small and lasting tweaks to our routine. They also have a contest to win 10,000 Birchbox Points, though it’s not active yet.

American Crew Alternator

American Crew Alternator

American Crew Alternator ($1.50) I’m not sure about the endless pliability that this product promises but I’m happy to try out a new hair product that isn’t stiff. Smells interesting and makes it feel silky.

Ernest Supplies Gel Face Wash

Ernest Supplies Gel Face Wash

ERNEST SUPPLIES Soap-free Gel Face Wash ($1.85) Birchbox seems to send me Ernest Supplies in each box, and this month was no exception. This soap-free face wash will make sure your face doesn’t dry out. Smells kind of lemony.

Mayron's Goods Chapstuff

Mayron’s Goods Chapstuff

Mayron’s Goods Chapstuff ($14) This is a full size product, although it’s quite small. This is perfect for winter – it’s packed with shea butter, coca butter, coconut oil, as well as various other oils and extracts. I like that it’s easy to apply anywhere that needs extra protection. This is very nice and I will use the whole thing.

Reviver

Reviver

Reviver Dry Deodorant Swipes for Clothes ($3) I guess this is for swiping the pits on your clothes when you need freshening up.

Tommy John Trunks

Tommy John Trunks

Tommy John 360° Sport Trunk ($31) Um, wow. These sure are silky drawers. These are from the Tommy John “Second Skin” line – “the most body-conscious underwear available.” Perhaps they would have been better in the February box. It features a horizontal “quick draw” fly and has a key pocket for when you’re wearing gym shorts. These are decidedly workout undies and are quite comfy. I like their attention to not having excess fabric, and I may try out their no-ride up undershirts the next time I purchase some. Tommy John’s Second Skin is made of Non-Pilling Micro Modal. I am impressed.

My January Birchbox Man had over $51 in products. I thought the Chapstuff and underwear were totally awesome. You can see all Birchbox Man Reviews. Soxiety Socks and Apolis Tie

Soxiety Socks and Apolis Tie

Soxiety Striped Socks ($12) Great way to make a statement and add some color in a boring office wardrobe.

Apolis Flannel Wool Tie ($68)  It’s the first time I’ve ever seen a wool tie. Perfect for Vermont. It will go well with a peacoat or a non-traditional blazer, or a sweater or vest. Adds texture rather than pattern.

Mark + Graham Dopp

Mark + Graham Dopp

Mark and Graham Small Everyday Leather Travel Pouch ($79) ($) Buttery soft gray leather dopp.

Malin + Goetz Essentials Kit

Malin + Goetz Essentials Kit

Malin+Goetz  Essential Kit ($30) This set contains everything you need for travel. It’s the full spectrum of Malin + Goetz travel size toiletries. face cleanser & moisturizer, body wash & moisturizer, and shampoo and conditioner. The smell of every item is different and fantastic.

Monocle Speaker

Monocle Speaker

Native Union Monocle Speaker ($50) I haven’t tried this out yet but I am looking forward to testing it out for FaceTime.

Krave Jerky + Chip-Zel-Pop

Krave Jerky + Chip-Zel-Pop

Funky Chunky ChipZelPop ($3.50) This is quite the indulgent snack. I would have been thrilled with just this item.

Krave Jerky ($7)  Very tender – it’s like dried roast beef and isn’t tough. The flavor – Sweet Chipotle – is not very spicy and nicely sweet.

Don’t forget to take a look at other Men’s Lifestyle Subscription Boxes.  The regular Popsugar subscription would make an excellent gift for Valentine’s Day. My wife eagerly awaits her box every month though she easily reviews around 100 subscription boxes every month. Read all her Popsugar Must Have Box Reviews here.

December BroBox Review – Holiday Buzz Edition

BroBox sent me this subscription box for my review.

December’s BroBox is the “Holiday Buzz” edition and is packed with caffeine-filled delights to get you through the holidays. After Christmas week – filled with Santa duties and multiple power outages – I will gladly partake of a few of these buzz-laden treats. BroBox is a very inexpensive subscription box and I think it’s well worth the cost. When you get your box, you’ll get a coupon for your next box for just $11.

BroBox Packaging

BroBox Packaging

BroBox once again pushes the envelope of what can be caffeinated and consumed. This box features the usual suspects: chocolate in bar and candy form, plus a personal favorite – Perky Jerky – and  sunflower seeds and other unique caffeinated delights.

Turbo Truffle I am looking forward to trying these. I really like caffeinated chocolate.

Perky Jerky

Perky Jerky

Perky Jerky  This is pretty tasty and I was excited to see it again. It’s flavored with guarana and it’s very tender.

SpazzStick and Shower Shock

Shower Shock Does caffeinated soap do anything?  Apparently yes. Lather up before you even have a cup. This is the crowning jewel of the box. I’ve never seen topically applied caffeine. Can you rub it on your balls to take out the wrinkles?

SpazzStick Caffeinated Lip Balm – Vanilla Toffee  Nice and sweet. Very tasty. Perhaps too tasty for a caffeinated balm.

Brobox Maze Pen

Brobox Maze Pen

BroBox Maze Pen. This is awesome. I love the BroBox branded items.

You can also select the frequency (my Bombfell comes bi-monthly) and what you’d like to receive. You can also select to be surprised.

December 2013 Bombfell:

Big Star Henley

December Birchbox Man Review

Birchbox Man had a different look this month. December’s theme is “Man of the Year” to celebrate your own personal accomplishments for the year. My box had 5 items plus a bonus item, plus a great look just for the holiday season.

December 2013 Birchbox Man: Man of the Year

Outer box.

Inner Box just for December.

Man of the Year.

Info card.

This was a really great box – great variety, great value.

H.I.M-istry Vitamin C Moisturizing Balm I like this one – it has that Froot Loops smell. Intense orange smell

GO247 Face Scrub Works great – took all the stuff off my nose. Definitely gets rid of the oil.

Old Calgary Alpha Wallet 100% wool – will keep your credit cards and cash warm & dry. Has a nice look and slides right into your pocket without bulk.

Birchbox Screen Swiper I have an obsession with screen cloths. This sticks on your phone and you can flip it over and wipe down your phone. It travels with your phone. Awesome.

Raw Materials Sport Fix Soap Black soap and fragrance free. Made out of bamboo carbon so perhaps deodorizing as well?

PRORASO Liquid Aftershave Cream Italian barbershop scent. Totally classic and perfect for the traditional man

Votivo Mini Travel Candle Smells like grampa. Classic men’s scent – not woody but slight scent of booze and old man. It’s nice.

Birchbox Holiday Catalog From the wife – Definitely check out the holiday shop at Birchbox Man. Stuff for everyone. See the Birchbox Cyber Monday coupon here or try MOBILE20 for straight up 20% off your order.

It’s virtually impossible to value this box – the wallet isn’t exactly the same as on Birchbox Man. I’m guessing it has a value of around $45.

November 2013 Bespoke Post: The Butcher

Every Bespoke Post post comes with a detailed card with descriptions of each item. The Butcher Box included suggestions and pairings for the food.

Treeline Woodworks Butcher Block ($115) Made in LA, this handsome block is sturdy, but not too huge to be practical. It;s light enough to store and break out for a carving station, present as a beautiful cheese board, or make quick work of your pre meal prep. The value on this box is astonishing.

Liber & Co Tonic Syrup ($13) Über premium upgrade to the gin and tonic – my favorite. Add some naturally sweetened quinine allow and transform seltzer and gin into something delightful, or experiment with your own creations.

Noble Handcrafted Bourbon-Aged & Tahitian Vanilla Maple Syrup ($9) Two unique gourmet takes on a breakfast table staple. Add some depth with the bourbon flavor, or try the vanilla chamomile for a flowery treat.

Slavo Salt Salt is the new sauce. Bring out the flavor of any savory dish with a pinch of pure flavor enhancer. I’ll need to hide this from my wife – she’ll steal it. (Note from wife: Thanks sweetheart, better eat it before I get it!)

Lord Nut Levington Rebel Mary Spicy Bloody Mary Peanuts ($5.49) Bloody Mary and cocktail peanuts brought together in a zesty snack. The lime and salt far outpaces the spice. Unique at first taste — addictive thereafter. (Another note from wife – this means he ate the entire can while watching football.)

Marie Sharp’s Habanero Pepper Sauce ($3) Habanero is the first ingredient, but this sauce is nicely balanced. You can splash it on for a delightful kick without burning out your taste buds.

I loved the Butcher Box from Bespoke Post. Long after the comestibles are gone we’ll still have the great butcher block cutting board. You can still get this exact box while supplies are available. You may also order additional items along with your monthly box. I’ve asked my wife to add the Artisan Sriracha in the Bespoke Post shop with our December box. Sign up now for Bespoke Post – no need to purchase right away – for notification of availability of next month’s box.

November BroBox Review

BroBox sent me this subscription box for my review.

November’s BroBox features handy items that’ll keep inconveniences from becoming emergencies. BroBox is a great box and they have new plans to save on longer term subscriptions. Get a six month subscription for $72 – that’s just $12 per box and all boxes include free shipping.

November 2013 BroBox:

November BroBox was a great box.

Grandpa’s Pine Tar Soap ($1.39) This is classic product just waiting to be rediscovered. Great for any cleansing needs. The unique scent of this bar comes from the natural pine oils, so it’s a great option for hunters and outdoorsmen.

Dude Wipes Portable freshness for any of your stinky parts. No need to drag a whole box with you.

Grandma’s Secret Spot Remover ($5) Never lose a favorite shirt to a grease stain again. This tried-and-true formula can rescue your wardrobe from blood, grease, grass stains and more.

Fashion Anchor collar stays ($5.99 for a 12 pack) As someone who wears collared shirts but hates to starch and iron, this product is great. Avoid frumpy collars without chasing down collar inserts.

Rayovac 2 hour power ($7) Simply plug into most mobile phones and get emergency power anywhere. With a 10 year shelflife, this is a must-have for anyone who relies on their phone… which is everyone. The batteries are replaceable.

Multi-tool This genius gadget comes with its own leather sleeve and can ride safely in your pocket or on a keychain. Provides a multitude of wrenches, openers, edges and other handy devices in a single portable tool.

This was an awesome BroBox. I loved everything in it and will use it all. I appreciated the attention to the little things, like the spot remover and collar stays – things that I would never purchase myself but have need of.

November Men’s Pijon Box Review – Subscription Box for College Students

The latest PijonBox addresses the perennial problem of getting good food on the go. Instead of protein bars or candy try these portable upgrades.

The Subscription: PijonBox
The Description: College care subscription tailored to needs of recipient plus a delightful surprise every time. Crates are stuffed with fun and useful items, like food and snacks, cleaning supplies, grooming and personal hygiene, and more!

November 2013 PijonBox:

EZ Squeezees let you take your own juices, smoothies (and cocktails?) on the go. You no longer have an excuse for shelling out for a prepared protein shake.

Light my fire sporks are a durable, washable, reusable and highly portable version of the much-maligned disposable utensil. These have a handy cutting edge and are sure to improve the spork’s reputation.

Joshua tree body wash is thrown in for good measure. I love the scent — very minty. Also biodegradable and plant based, so feel free to suds up at the swimming hole. No more stinky hikers.

Chia seeds are a great way to get fiber and herby oils in your diet without adding alot of calories. Chia squeeze adds real fruit and vegetables to the mix and combines them in a convenient go pouch.

Tapaz 2 go combines a classic creamy hummus with crunchy lentil crackers. Think pita chips — but healthier.

Revitapop takes a traditional lollipop and packs it full of b12. Get the sugar you crave and the vitamins you need for sustained energy.

October 2013 Birchbox Man: More Good

I like the Birchbox Man information card because it tells me what to do with unfamiliar products.

Ernest Supplies Protective Matte Moisturizer ($3) Goes on smooth and lends a much needed boost of moisture to ward off the bitter dryness of November.

Baxter of California After Shave Balm ($9) Fresh and invigorating, this soothing balm has a pronounced menthol tingle. Rememiscent of Vicks vaporub… In a good way.

English Laundry Notting Hill Eau de Parfum ($1.75) Lime keeps this fragrance lively. Sweet jasmine and mild cedar balance it out. A spirited alternative to musk that will warm you as the winter chill approaches.

Herban Essentials Towelettes ($0.80) A blast of lemon aromatherapy available on the go. Great for refreshing prior to deplaning.

Apolis Transit Issue Travel Candle ($30) Cypress and fig lend a subtle and relaxing vibe to this travel-ready candle. Creates a homy atmosphere, not a stench.

My November Birchbox Man was one of the higher value boxes this month (largely due to the candle), with a total value right around $45.
