Bespoke Post Review: Covered Box

With Bespoke Post you know the contents of the box before you get it. I was really surprised to see the addition of the Old Spice body wash and hair pomade. It was a nice surprise.

The Wurkin Stiffs Power Stays are magnetic collar stays and I have a pair that I have enjoyed using. I wanted this box because I knew I’d be getting this second pair. Plus my wife made me donate my old garment bag. 

I admit, this is a much nicer garment bag than the one that we got rid of.  It’s made by Blue Claw specially for Bespoke Post and perfect for carrying around a jacket or some shirts when you need to keep them crisp and clean. This box also came with an old school clothing brush. The information card had packing tips, like carrying toiletries in a quality dopp kit and to wrap your shoes before packing.  Not rocket science but helpful.

Ramage Jacket ($92) It’s like a baseball jacket but with heavy cuffs and updated styling, maybe a mix of some varsity jacket styling. The zip pockets are a really great detail on this jacket.

Sawtelle ($32) I can’t say that I’d pay that price for a branded tee, but it’s an interesting throwback design and a definite improvement in my eyes over Five Four’s graphic tees from last year. The styling is much better. I love the fabric they use on their shirts – it’s very soft.

For October, Birchbox Man collaborated with The League, FXX’s fantasy football series.  This was a surprising box, as I received not one but three lifestyle accessories.  Birchbox Man typically sends at least one, but the past several months have had more.  I was able to select the primary grooming item in my box, and I picked up the Baxter Deodorant.

The goods. I was surprised to see so many things instead of grooming items, but I had no complaints. 

Quirky Organizer Trio – an earbud winder, a cable organizer (this will be perfect for my desk), and snappy little bungees. I have just the use for the bungees.

Baxter of California Deodorant – Perfect, because it’s aluminum free. I selected this item as my October sample selection.

Blind Barber Watermint Gin Shave Cream – Gin is a fine drink and this is very reminiscent of it. Nice and cooling on my face for a great shave. Smells like hangover.

das boom industries Bay Rum, Smoke & Dirt Everywhere Body Lotion – My wife will not even try to steal this one. Smells like a football field.

September 2014 Bombfell

It’s not really a surprise as you receive an email from your stylist in advance of the shipment. I find this immensely helpful and non wasteful. There are just some items of clothing I wouldn’t wear. This wasn’t one of them, so I had it shipped.

It comes in an outer mailer wrapped in plastic. There’s usually some sort of a silly toy – my daughter took this one to play with, but if you don’t have kids, it’s a fun desk toy/twiddly bit.

I got the Johnnie-O 4 button short sleeve polo in “Green Machine” ($69) This is a high quality surf-inspired polo that is pre-weathered. I really liked the looks of it and the color is great.

I love that this is a nice cotton jersey instead of a staid pique traditional polo shirt. I also find the stylists’ sizing notes helpful. I keep my measurements on file with Bombfell and they are able to send me the correct size for that particular piece of clothing, regardless of what it says on the label.

They’ve recently overhauled their entire site and I have noticed that their clothes have definitely taken on more of a hipster vibe. I think this is a good thing.

Miller Pullover ($72) This is a great sweater with a 1/4 zip neck opening. Perfect for throwing on for a nice fall walk with the dog.

Homer Button Down ($60) I think the price on this is exaggerated but I still think the subscription itself is a good value. This looks great under the pullover.

Holloway Henley ($38) This is my favorite item in the box. The fabric is super soft and will be a great layering staple.

September 2014 Birchbox Man: Hit the Books

This month was a little odd, with a mixed 3-pack of Field Notebooks and Clic Pens. I did receive a sample from my favorite fragrance company, English Laundry, in Riviera, a warm and spicy citrus scent, as well as my selection of SmartSkin’s A27 Anti-Aging Eye Cream. In addition, Gilchrist & Soames body lotion was included along with a Bonobos Pocket Square. I’m considering making the baby into a pirate with this one. 

I was mildly happy with this box but I would have preferred something other than stationery.

This is a fun addition to a blazer.

Every Birchbox Man box comes with one lifestyle item, and I was surprised to receive two this month. I’ll end up using the notebooks but nobody in the house is really keen on ballpoint pens, even though they have nice retro styling, they’re just not great to write with.  I guess they’re safe to keep in a bag or a pocket, or at least more so than a rollerball.

July Five Four Clothing Club Review #1

Dress Rossmore Jean ($78) This is a straight leg denim (see my guide to the different Five Four Club inseams and denim styles) pant and darker than it appears in the photos (it was night, I used a flash). Pretty thin for jeans, so comfortable and not bulky. Some really nice tailoring touches all over the pant with extra reinforcement where you need it. There’s a nice sheen to it that is subtle and not flashy.

Miguel Henley ($44) This is a baseball-style shirt in the characteristic thin Five Four Club fabric, which I really like. I don’t recall any 3/4 sleeve shirts from Five Four so this was a great addition. The sleeves are the perfect length – they fall where I’d roll them up anyways, but removes all that extra fabric.

July Five Four Clothing Club Review #1

Below is what I received as part of my regular monthly shipment for July.

I got this great explorer Dopp Kit. Some subscribers got a shirt tucked in theirs. Five Four Club does send out bonuses in random packages.

Walter Two-Tone Shirt ($38) I like the v-neck on this shirt and I don’t have anything like it. It’s somewhat thicker than the usual Five Four club graphic tee, but still nice and lightweight.

Dress Henning Jeans ($78) The packing slip says grey but I call them black jeans. They are similarly styled to the jeans above but more toned down, so in line with my profile, and high-quality. They are super soft in comparison to the first jeans, which were stiffer.

You can see that these ultra-comfy jeans have the same reinforcements as the first pair.

Juniper ($38) This is thin but textured so not really see through. It’s not sheer. It’s very interesting! It’s more of a dressy tee with a henley style neck and a pocket. It’s kind of a combo shirt!

This was a great month from Five Four Club, it’s definitely one of my favorite months so far, and the club has definitely improved over the last year – I’ve been a subscriber for 12 full months now.
