Guide to Five Four Club Jeans, Pants, and Inseams

Posted by Thomas on August 1, 2014

Five Four Club is a men’s monthly subscription box that focuses on clothing. Every box is a $120+ value. You can exchange the clothing for sizing issues, which I have done plenty of times without hassle. You can also change your profile at any time in order to switch what kinds of clothes you receive.

Five Four Club also sends out pants, and nearly all their club shipments for July included jeans, as a way to gear up for the cooler fall weather that will soon hit many parts of the country. You might be confused about how Five Four Club approaches pants sizing. Instead of the traditional waist + inseam measurement, Five Four Club will send standardized inseams based on your waist size.

Anything under 34 inches will have a 32″ inseam; 34″+ will have a 34″ inseam. It’s quite easy to get denim and other pants tailored. We have a tailor at the mall who charges a minimal fee for hemming pants.

There are also two types of fits available in Five Four Club denim – Original Straight.

And Five Four Club‘s Relaxed Fit. Remember that the styles you will receive are based on your profile: be sure to mark down your preferences accordingly.

Five Four Club has also conveniently provided us with a pants cuffing guide, in case you’d forgotten.

Beltology Belt – Awesome belt perfect for Thanksgiving — you can set at virtually any length since you fasten the belt in-between any of the woven cords, not just at pre-set holes. Fantastically stretchy too, so don’t err on the long side when ordering.

IMG_5879

Jack & Mulligan Flask:  a classier alternative to plastic when sneaking booze into your favorite venue.  The cloth cover is especially cool and adds some insulation and grip, allowing you to tuck it under your belt.

IMG_5878

Hefenweizen Soap:  At first, I thought:  “who wants to smell like stale beer?”, but this soap is light and citrusy with a very bright and pleasant sent.  Avocado and grapefruit , not stale beer, are the feature players in this delightful bar.

Note from Wifey – I also picked up the Shelter box for my husband (no longer available), and the Detailed box. I know he loved the Shelter box and the fancy umbrella. Zero word on Detailed. I think he was either pissed about it or tucked it away because the snow hadn’t melted in Vermont. Probably both. Some guys are really into detailing their cars – he isn’t one of them. At all. But I have heard really awesome things about that box and the high quality of the paste wax.  Neither of us have a clue why the booklet for this box was so ugly. Speaking of the shop – I totally busted out the Mr. Kensington’s tonight because we ran out of Heinz. Our refined children approved.

Bespoke Post Review: Carry Box

IMG_0140

The Bespoke Post Carry Box contains some fun summer accessories.  The Line of Trade slim wallet and Malibu Keyrings carabiner are a fun way to tote your essentials.  The JLK Sails bracelet and Carolina Manufacturing bandana will add some flair to any summer outfit.  Thrown in for good measure are classic Choward’s mints.

Another note from wife – I guarantee you that my husband’s use of flair is in the Office Space sense. He doesn’t wear bracelets. However, he’s a fan of any super slimline wallet, so I still got him this box. I expect that the kids will have a new bandana to play with as long as my husband doesn’t find a Rick Springfield revival to wear it to. And I don’t joke – the other summer in Vermont there was totally a concert.

I didn’t do an April Birchbox Man review, or a May one. However, my wife got her own box for May (??) and you can view her May Birchbox Man review here. The highlights of my April and May boxes were the lifestyle items. My April box included a $50 pair of headphones and the May Birchbox Man included a great storage pouch from Roosevelt Supply. I have other pieces from that brand and they are all extremely sturdy.

June 2014 Birchbox Man: Away We Go

IMG_0146

June’s Birchbox Man focused on saying yes to travel adventure.
IMG_0142

Included this month are Tommy John loafer liners to protect your feet and keep them dry and comfortable.  The Laundress Wash & Stain bar lets you keep your clothes spotless on the go, and Toweldry styling clay creates the sharp hair to match.IMG_0145

My Birchbox Man also included brightly scented Mt. Sapola lemongrass lotion and Tahitian Waters cologne from English Laundry, my favorite purveyor of colognes and eau de toilette, a Birchbox discovery for me.

The two-pack of Ultimate Liner socks are valued at $16.50. My wife says both Birchboxes are a good deal, but that the men’s box is best because of the monthly accessory or clothing item.

March 2014 Birchbox Man: Gentleman’s Code

IMG_0115   IMG_0118 Luster Premium White: this fast-acting whitener brightens from first use. Luster offers a complete whitener suite, but this is an easy entree to whitening. Has a fresh, minty flavor similar to Pepsident.

CLEAN eau de toilette: their Shower Fresh scent lets you smell freshly-lathered even when you are due for a wash. Smells like soap. IMG_0120 Drinkwel: these capsules are specifically-designed to help your body process alcohol and let you wake up with minimal malaise. IMG_0116 MeUndies: this classic tee is soft and simple. The slim fit flatters without being fussy.

The value of the MeUndies shirt is $25, well over the cost of the box. A yearly Birchbox Man subscription is $195, which makes it $16.25 per month. You get Birchbox points for reviewing the items in the box, which you can use on full-size products at the store.

Birchbox Man Review – February 2014

The February Birchbox Man came with a cryptic note listing cat behaviors (I think).  I have no idea why, because the box contains several very nice products completely unrelated to cats.   It was apparently an epic printing/proofing error.

February 2014 Birchbox Man: Gentleman’s Code

Back of Info Card

Back of Info Card

Fortunately the back of the card was not laced with bizarre cat behaviors.

Power Stays

Power Stays

würkin stiffs Power Stays ($20)  Very cool.  I have never seen these before:  metal collar stays secured with very powerful magnets.  I assumed they would be flimsy and the magnets would fall of in my shirt, but I was very surprised at how sturdy they are. The stays are letter-opener thick, and the magnets are strong enough that they thwarted several attempts to photograph them unattached to the stays.

Pomade & Cologne

Pomade & Cologne

Baxter of California Hard Cream Pomade ($3) a hard cream, but extremely silky.  Unlike a putty or clay, it feels like spongy butter and quickly becomes tacky when worked into hair.

English Laundry Signature ($1.50)  their “Signature” fragrance combines bergamot, vetiver, and sandalwood.  I really like this fragrance (perhaps because my everyday cologne is vetiver-based and I am crazy about earl grey); it actually reminds me of fresh laundry.  It’s very fresh and warm, and the bergamot adds a citrus brightness without smelling like Pledge.  I’ve enjoyed each of the English Laundry fragrances I’ve sampled, but this may be my favorite.

Ayres & Face Wash

Ayres & Face Wash

Gentleman’s Brand Co. Foaming Face Wash ($3.85)  made of mainly organic plant extracts, this Aussie offering has no harsh chemicals.  It is witch hazel-based, but the various plant extracts give it a vaguely twizzlerish secondary aroma.

AYRES Bar Soap ($1.57)  Shea butter based, this Patagonian product is very lightly scented with jasmine and rosemary.  Appears to be dye-free and has a pleasant waxiness instead of the typical greasiness you’d expect from a shea bar.

My February Birchbox Man was right around $30 – perhaps one of the lowest value boxes I’ve received. Nevertheless I’m very pleased with the collar stays and will use everything else. I renewed my subscription just the other week. An annual subscription is $195 – which means you get 2 free boxes, plus you get points for purchasing the subscription and for reviewing the items in it – almost $80 in points back. I think it’s a good deal.
