  Luster Premium White: this fast-acting whitener brightens from first use. Luster offers a complete whitener suite, but this is an easy entree to whitening. Has a fresh, minty flavor similar to Pepsident.

CLEAN eau de toilette: their Shower Fresh scent lets you smell freshly-lathered even when you are due for a wash. Smells like soap. The February Birchbox Man came with a cryptic note listing cat behaviors (I think).  I have no idea why, because the box contains several very nice products completely unrelated to cats.   It was apparently an epic printing/proofing error.

Power Stays

würkin stiffs Power Stays ($20)  Very cool.  I have never seen these before:  metal collar stays secured with very powerful magnets.  I assumed they would be flimsy and the magnets would fall of in my shirt, but I was very surprised at how sturdy they are. The stays are letter-opener thick, and the magnets are strong enough that they thwarted several attempts to photograph them unattached to the stays.

Pomade & Cologne

Baxter of California Hard Cream Pomade ($3) a hard cream, but extremely silky.  Unlike a putty or clay, it feels like spongy butter and quickly becomes tacky when worked into hair.

English Laundry Signature ($1.50)  their “Signature” fragrance combines bergamot, vetiver, and sandalwood.  I really like this fragrance (perhaps because my everyday cologne is vetiver-based and I am crazy about earl grey); it actually reminds me of fresh laundry.  It’s very fresh and warm, and the bergamot adds a citrus brightness without smelling like Pledge.  I’ve enjoyed each of the English Laundry fragrances I’ve sampled, but this may be my favorite.

Ayres & Face Wash

Gentleman’s Brand Co. Foaming Face Wash ($3.85)  made of mainly organic plant extracts, this Aussie offering has no harsh chemicals.  It is witch hazel-based, but the various plant extracts give it a vaguely twizzlerish secondary aroma.

AYRES Bar Soap ($1.57)  Shea butter based, this Patagonian product is very lightly scented with jasmine and rosemary.  Appears to be dye-free and has a pleasant waxiness instead of the typical greasiness you’d expect from a shea bar.

My February Birchbox Man was right around $30 – perhaps one of the lowest value boxes I’ve received. Nevertheless I’m very pleased with the collar stays and will use everything else. I renewed my subscription just the other week. An annual subscription is $195 – which means you get 2 free boxes, plus you get points for purchasing the subscription and for reviewing the items in it – almost $80 in points back. I think it’s a good deal.

American Crew Alternator ($1.50) I’m not sure about the endless pliability that this product promises but I’m happy to try out a new hair product that isn’t stiff. Smells interesting and makes it feel silky.

Ernest Supplies Gel Face Wash

ERNEST SUPPLIES Soap-free Gel Face Wash ($1.85) Birchbox seems to send me Ernest Supplies in each box, and this month was no exception. This soap-free face wash will make sure your face doesn’t dry out. Smells kind of lemony.

Mayron’s Goods Chapstuff

Mayron’s Goods Chapstuff ($14) This is a full size product, although it’s quite small. This is perfect for winter – it’s packed with shea butter, coca butter, coconut oil, as well as various other oils and extracts. I like that it’s easy to apply anywhere that needs extra protection. This is very nice and I will use the whole thing.

Reviver

Reviver Dry Deodorant Swipes for Clothes ($3) I guess this is for swiping the pits on your clothes when you need freshening up.

Tommy John Trunks

Tommy John 360° Sport Trunk ($31) Um, wow. These sure are silky drawers. These are from the Tommy John “Second Skin” line – “the most body-conscious underwear available.” Perhaps they would have been better in the February box. It features a horizontal “quick draw” fly and has a key pocket for when you’re wearing gym shorts. These are decidedly workout undies and are quite comfy. I like their attention to not having excess fabric, and I may try out their no-ride up undershirts the next time I purchase some. Tommy John’s Second Skin is made of Non-Pilling Micro Modal. I am impressed.

Ernest Supplies Protective Matte Moisturizer ($3) Goes on smooth and lends a much needed boost of moisture to ward off the bitter dryness of November.

Baxter of California After Shave Balm ($9) Fresh and invigorating, this soothing balm has a pronounced menthol tingle. Rememiscent of Vicks vaporub… In a good way.

English Laundry Notting Hill Eau de Parfum ($1.75) Lime keeps this fragrance lively. Sweet jasmine and mild cedar balance it out. A spirited alternative to musk that will warm you as the winter chill approaches.

Herban Essentials Towelettes ($0.80) A blast of lemon aromatherapy available on the go. Great for refreshing prior to deplaning.

Apolis Transit Issue Travel Candle ($30) Cypress and fig lend a subtle and relaxing vibe to this travel-ready candle. Creates a homy atmosphere, not a stench.

My November Birchbox Man was one of the higher value boxes this month (largely due to the candle), with a total value right around $45.

October 2013 Birchbox Man: Eureka!

TOWELDRY Mid-Styler ($18, full size) I’m very excited about this hybrid product. Out of the jar, it has the consistency of softened butter, but with no oiliness. Nearly unfragranced. Very nice once applied; provides sufficient guidance to hair but has no tackiness like putties/clay and no crispness like gels.

Billy Jealousy Combination Code Face Moisturizer ($26, full size) This is a great non-greasy moisturizer… After applying, I did not even have to wash my hands before using my touchscreen device. Left my skin very smooth, and the super light scent reminds me of a toned down version of the green tea rinse id once received in a salon.

EVOLUTIONMAN Cleanse & Shave ($23, full size) Has a bright and pleasant marmalade scent during application, as invigorating orange oil is the dominant characteristic. rinses clean and surprisingly doesn’t seem to leave scent after washing.

Vitamine & Sea Shaving Cream ($36, full size) If you don’t care for effervescent, alcohol or menthol based shaving preparations, this is a great alternative. It nourishes your face and slicks it for shaving without the burn, tingle or obnoxious odor of the stuff from the can. Delightfully (nearly) unscented.

Eastern collective Lightning cable ($23.95) cool gear. This USB to Lightning adapter is styled like a bungee cord. I’ll wager it’s less prone to cracking than the white-coated standard issue. Plus no risk of someone taking your charge cord, at least not by mistake. (Note from wife: I stole this. Tom has a 4s, and I have a 5.)

Birchbox Man is a reliable monthly source for some new grooming tries, a fun curiosity or two, and some other high-end surprises. September featured an adventure ready theme, so the non-grooming items were targeted towards the stylish traveler.

Vitaman Face & Body Cleanser Quite nice; no gritty exfoliating pebbles here. worked well to remove oil, Leaving my face nice and smooth, But it’s not over dry. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the product is it’s smell: The unmistakable scent of Fruitloops!

Histoire de Parfums 1899 This fragrance boast of Bergamot, Juniper berry, black pepper, orange flowers, iris, cinnamon, vanilla, vetiver and amber. When I first sprayed this onto my wrist it reminded me of that certain Avon product that doubles as bug spray. Within a second however the alcohol had evaporated and I found the fragrance to be complex, warm, inviting and both flowery and masculine. The citrus and pepper notes are pronounced with upon first sniff but it is the vetiver and vanilla that hold the day.

Ernest Supplies Shave Cream The pleasing barbershop scent is dominated by the jojoba and other seeds, herbs and extracts that go in to this complex Balm. You can feel the cooling of the menthol but the scent takes a backseat.

There was also a voucher for a subscription to Men’s Health magazine in the box. My wife redeemed it for the rebate, as I already have a subscription.

For August, Birchbox Man‘s theme was “Serve It Up.” The information card discussed dinner parties and cocktails, and the August Birchbox Man included a sturdy apron along with the usual grooming products.

August 2013 Birchbox Man: Serve It Up

Billy Jealousy Liquid Sand Exfoliating Facial Cleanser ($3) Surprisingly non-gritty. Light scent of juniper, reminiscent of a decent gin. Applies effortlessly and leaves skin soft and renewed.

Balla powder ($1.50) Should be called ball powder, as that is the intended application referenced on the canister. Very fine texture and silky feel; scent is more akin to a classic deodorant than to the feminine fragrance of baby powder.

PLANT face oil ($3) With a slight menthol character and hints of citrus, this rich oil has the appearance of a furniture rejuvenating oil. When rubbed in thoroughly It is nongreasy yet maintains skins moisture longer than traditional Moisturizing creams.

English Laundry Arrogant Cologne ($1.50) Refreshingly lacking in citrus and flowery notes. The sandalwood and Cedar provide a fresh and dry woodiness creating an assertiveness but unobtrusive character . Not overtly musky.

Roosevelt supply apron ($28) Tough and well fitted perfect complement for barbecue, shaving, and any other messy projects. oversized pocket can easily accommodate a beer can, smokes, or other other tools of the trade.
